Chikupira Model School.... where it all started
Some quick facts....
- It is a Roman Catholic sponsored mission school.
- It was founded in 1958.
- It is a large school with over 2000 boys and girls aged from 6 to 18 who are all day pupils.
- Over 200 orphans attend the school and there are many more who have only one parent alive.
- There are about 30 members of staff.
Despite the school being sponsored by the Catholic Church, the school is multi-denominational and its curriculum covers the usual subjects taught at primary level.
These subjects are:
~ English (a very high priority is placed on this subject)
~ Religious education
~ Social Studies
~ Home economics
There are many clubs which take place on a Wednesday afternoon after school, including art, music and drama. As well as this there are 2 main sports teams in the school. These are the football and netball teams. Whenever there are sports matches a huge number of people come and watch and they are very big occasions for the school, the children and the local community. Whenever a goal is scored in a football or netball match there is a huge amount of singing, dancing and pitch invading! Their enthusiasm is a wonderful sight to behold. Some students in the school are also phenomenal athletes. There was the Southern African cross-country championships being held in Zomba whilst I was there and 2 girls from Chikupira ran superbly and did their country and their school proud.
